Immortalising Acharya Vidhyasagar Maharaj: When art met spirituality in Madhya Pradesh’s Kundalpur

Death, often brushed aside in conversation, remains the most undeniable reality of our existence. It’s a truth we all face, yet many hesitate to confront. Growing up in a close-knit joint family, I witnessed the ebb and flow of life through the lens of multiple losses. However, amidst these poignant moments, one memory stands out—a memory of my grandfather’s passing, etched with a profound sense of acceptance and serenity.

I recall that day as if it were yesterday. The air was heavy with the resonance of mantras, a collective chorus that seemed to guide my grandfather’s soul towards its next journey. Amidst this sacred symphony, I heard my mother’s voice calling out urgently, “Bandana, come quickly, Dadaji is leaving.” With a sense of reverence and urgency, I joined the gathered family as my grandfather peacefully transitioned. The chants lingered long after his physical presence faded, as if the collective prayers were tenderly guiding his soul towards its cosmic destination. It was a poignant yet beautiful experience—a testament to the harmonious acceptance of life’s transient nature.

In a recent chapter of introspection, on 18th February, I encountered an image that resonated deeply within me—the first portrayal of Acharya Shri 108 Vidyasagar Ji Maharaj in his samadhi pose. The image transported me back in time, evoking a familiar sense of reverence and nostalgia. Despite the physical constraints, the Acharya’s serene countenance radiated an ethereal aura, leaving an indelible mark on my soul. For those unfamiliar, Acharya Shri 108 Vidyasagar Ji Maharaj was a seer within the Jain community, hailed as a contemporary deity within the Jain community. He voluntarily embrace Samadhi days before his passing. Aware about the end he relinquished food and water days before his passing, symbolized a profound spiritual journey towards enlightenment.

The concept of Samadhi resonated deeply with me, inspiring me to translate its essence into my artistic expression. I sought to capture the essence of the Acharya’s final moments, honoring his spiritual legacy through my work.

As fate would have it, my artistic journey intersected with a fellow artist, Jain Kamal, whose devotion to Vidyasagar Ji Maharaj mirrored my own. Such a Serendipity! Jain Kamal’s insights about the upcoming ascension ceremony of the Acharya Pada at Kundalpur on 14th April sparked a newfound purpose within me. Despite my initial reservations about participating in spiritual art, I felt compelled to contribute, as if it was a divine calling.

Thus began my transformative journey to Kundalpur, a pilgrimage that transcended mere physical distance. As I unveiled my sculpture amidst the sacred surroundings, I felt a profound connection with the community of devotees and seekers gathered there. It was a moment of artistic communion, where my creation served as a bridge between the tangible and the transcendent.

The experience left an indelible imprint on my soul, reaffirming the intrinsic connection between art and spirituality. In the beautiful amalgama of creation and devotion, I found a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment. This convergence of art and spirit offered me a unique perspective—a glimpse into the boundless possibilities that unfold when creativity meets reverence.

In conclusion, my journey from embracing life’s truths to embodying spiritual artistry has been a testament to the transformative power of expression. It gave me a unique perspective on the great things I can witness when art meets spirituality.
