Evolution of Consumerism

It demonstrates human development and the effect of consumer behaviour on achieving net zero.

Bandana Jain’s journey with recycled packaging material began during her first year of college when she stumbled upon a small piece of corrugated cardboard. Its earthy tone, textured edges, and fluted design captured her imagination, sparking a lifelong fascination. Determined to explore its potential, she created India’s first corrugated cardboard L-shaped five-seater sofa—a design that defied expectations with its durability and strength, surviving years of use and even Mumbai’s relentless monsoons.

She exclusively works with a specialized form of corrugated cardboard that is uniquely strong, water-resistant, termite-resistant, and food-grade. This choice reflects her commitment to sustainability while showcasing the material’s ability to transcend its conventional role.

The material isn’t just functional—it’s a modern, eco-friendly medium with a rich history. While it began as a practical solution for shipping and storage, it gained artistic recognition in 1974 through architect Frank Gehry’s award-winning Wiggle Chair. Today, it has evolved into a versatile medium for sculptures, murals, and furniture.

What makes it truly exceptional is its unique properties. It’s lightweight yet incredibly durable, a natural insulator for heat and sound, and easy to maintain due to its resistance to static electricity. These qualities make it a sustainable, practical, and innovative choice for contemporary design.

For Bandana, recycled cardboard is more than a medium—it’s a statement of creativity, responsibility, and possibility, redefining what’s possible with sustainable design.
